Did you know that there’s a Money Museum located within the complex of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas? I didn’t! So I was happy that one of my friends organized a homeschoolers’ field trip at the museum and they invited us to tag along.
The Money Museum at the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas
The Museo ng Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas or “The Money Museum” is home to many monetary artifacts and various memorabilia collected through the years.
Film Showing
We started the visit with a film showing. It was a pretty dated video (pegging it to early 00’s!) but it was still interesting. It showed how money was made and the different ways you can tell if the money you’re holding is real or fake.
The Museum Display
The sections of the museum are divided into different historical periods.
Historical Artifacts
You get to see different early forms of coins and money as well and learn how people used to trade back then.
Old Notes and Coins
Of course, the museum is home to many old bank notes and coins. There were also a few commemorative bills and coins on display.
The displays are a little too big for little kids. But he really wanted to see (and use the magnifying glass 😐 haha) so my husband had to carry him this way most of the time! 😉
Grab a Souvenir!
Grab these brochures from the information desk. They’re free and a great resource especially when homeschooling kids. The stories and info inside are pretty interesting! They also give away free comic books about saving and other details about banking but are better suited for older kids.
I lost my brochure (the one in front) and felt so bad that I did. If you visit, will you grab me one? I’ll pay for shipping! Haha.
Bonus: Keep an Eye Out on These Treasures
There are Amorsolo paintings in the museum! A wonderful bonus for art lovers.
Overall, it was an interesting visit. It’s great if you’re an enthusiast or if you’re going with older kids for educational purposes. However, I don’t really recommend this for younger kids unless this is something that interests them.
How to visit:
As it was my friend who organized this visit, I asked her how she went about securing entry. This is what she said she did:
- Called the museum first.
- Was told to send an email (bspmail@bsp.gov.ph) with details and the number of persons in the group.
- They will send a letter back once approved.
We’re not 100% sure but I believe it’s possible to just walk-in. However, there’s no guarantee that there will be a guide available and if they will be ready with the film showing. It’s probably best if you call ahead to be sure.
